I understood why Eeristani women do not eat with men. They are quite rightly afraid that the lecherous looks would make them choke on their food. I felt like a porn star when I was simply biting on a piece of local dark bread with some kind of savory seeds. Needless to say, I had to put down the sausage, although it looked delicious, because when I picked it up to put it in my mouth, I got such looks that it would have certainly gotten stuck in my throat. I never thought I’d be so unfortunate as to be watched intently by five hundred lustful men at the same time.

Nrogo groped me and took the tablets. Seeing my perplexed look, he leaned toward me.

“Warriors leave through the other doors,” he whispered into my ear. “If I had taken them earlier, it would have triggered the sensor.”

I could now definitely say that Nrogo’s shadow was very fast, and though he was sure that I couldn’t see it, I already did.

Finally, it turned out that women didn’t have any shadows, while warriors did, so I was actually dining with a bunch of ghosts.

I sat next to Nrogo at the head of the right-hand table. The left-hand table was twenty steps away. My father sat at the head of it all by himself. His sons, my half-brothers, sat to the sides of him, while other warriors were farther down the table. The table of the McVarras clan was a one-piece, curvy table, warping near the fireplace, and it was full with warriors.

The table where Nrogo and I sat was much smaller. I suspected that the tables adjusted to fit the number of people they were supposed to accommodate. Possibly, it had something to do with the sensors at the entrance registering the number of warriors. It’s possible, but it’s not necessarily so. Some kind of technology was obviously used here, and it was quite advanced.

I silently watched as the carcass of the huge animal that was roasting over the fire without the spit rose up by approximately a yard and was cut into hundreds of pieces by something invisible. These pieces flew out of the fire and then, as if carried by an invisible conveyor, floated over the tables. The warriors picked the pieces they liked and ate them. This happened with all of the food that was present at the dinner.

The menu was quite limited, though, and consisted of meat, sausages, raw steaks, three types of bread, soft white cheese, roasted poultry, fried fish, and cooked vegetables. That was it. Beverages included some bitter juice only. Nrogo told me not to drink it, and water was delivered as soon as the warrior requested it.

Dining in the other room, the women had maids that came up to the fire, waiting for the pieces of meat to fly onto their trays, and left to go back next door. Busted navigator in Taygar Desert, I had no idea what was happening there.
